Hans Verhoeven is a Canadian jazz drummer and percussionist who has been performing professionally since the age of 13. Known for his maturity, groove, and musical sensibility beyond his years, Hans began his career working with some of the most respected names in Canadian jazz, including Donnie Clark, Patrick Coleman, John Forrest, Ross Taggart, Ken Lister, and Paul Landsberg.
In Toronto, Hans studied at Humber College, where he collaborated with acclaimed musicians such as Brandi Disterheft, Laila Biali, Shirantha Bedagge, Peter Van Huffle, and Nathan Hiltz. He also studied extensively with Canadian jazz greats Don Thompson and Bob McLaren, further refining his artistry as a drummer.
Hans continued his musical journey in Montreal at McGill University, studying jazz drums under the legendary Chris McCann. During this time, he performed regularly with Andres Vial, Vanessa Rodrigues, Dave Turner, Paul Shrofel, Sarah Latendresse, Rafael Zaldivar, Al McLean, and many others, establishing himself as a versatile and in-demand jazz drummer.
Since relocating to British Columbia in 2012, Hans expanded his repertoire to include classical percussion. He earned a graduate degree from the University of Victoria, studying with percussionist, conductor, and educator William Linwood. From 2012 to 2025, Hans served as a faculty member at Vancouver Island University’s music department, where he mentored the next generation of Canadian musicians. During this period, he performed and recorded with an impressive roster of Canadian jazz legends, including Don Thompson, PJ Perry, Oliver Gannon, Neil Swainson, Phil Dwyer, Brad Turner, Christine Jensen, Tony Genge, Ryan Oliver, Brian Dickinson, Nick Peck, Jennifer Scott, Rene Worst, Hugh Fraser, and many more.
