Event Description

Event type: All Ages

Now in its second year, KCFF’s Doc Factory is an in-house program that provides instruction on film theory and documentary techniques, and guides participants through the process of making their own short documentaries under the guidance of program instructor Ahmed Ismaiel Nour. Our talented second cohort has produced a wildly diverse selection of films that might just inspire you to apply to the 2026-27 program for a chance to tell your own tales! Please note: these films are not yet rated and may contain disturbing themes. Viewer discretion is advised.

COUNTRY HUSTLE (d. Carolyn Butts)
A single mother and self employed artist takes a chance at living in a small rural village in a waning economy. With city living conditions worsening and an uncertain global economy, young people today contemplate an escape to build a fantasy life in the country. Can the transition be made?

DREAMCATCHER (d. Noah Levac)
Set against the backdrop of the Ontario housing crisis of the 2020s, a political activist and a recently housed street person seek to cultivate a community that gives voice to the vulnerable.

I SEE MORE WITH ONE EYE (d. Erfan Azizi)
A one-eyed young woman, confined to her home and intertwined with her pain — her pain becomes even more intense when it is revealed her eye was taken deliberately, in pursuit of freedom.

JIM GARRARD’S LAST TAPE (d. Geoff Hendry)
A look at the career of playwright and provacateur Jim Garrard through the lens of his final performance of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape.

NANCY IN PARTS (d. Lee Cunningham)
Seven short vignettes exploring the life and work of Canadian painter and craftsperson, Nancy Steele with narration by Nancy Steele.

THE PARROT WHO DIED AND BECAME FREE (d. Leah Murray)
Can psychedelics alter the way you think? Can they change your perspective on past suffering? Can they help you answer the question: who am I? Join one woman diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression as she explores intravenous ketamine treatment from the inside out.

TODAY IS A GIFT (d. David Rendall)
A harrowing and poignant portrait of 96 year-old Sally Rendall as she recounts her fortuitous survival through the Holocaust in Romania and her modest new beginnings as a Montréal immigrant. Elegantly captured through the eyes of her grandson, the film blends traditional documentary with imaginative hand-drawn charcoal animations.
